WEEKEND PREVIEW
City’s Alliance side will hope it is third time lucky tomorrow, when they entertain local rivals Harraby Catholic Club in round 2 of the Kicks Leisure Challenge cup (k.o. 2.00). The game was twice postponed during January when the icy weather was at its worst. Harraby are in fine form, with six successive wins, including five away from home. In that spell, they have scored 26 goals and conceded just 2.
Harraby may include ex-City player Lee Sturrock in their squad. He never played Alliance football for City but has featured in recent weeks for the Edgehill Road side.
In the County League, City travel to Windscale Reserves, looking for a win that would take them to the top of the table. City are presently in 4th place but none of the top three sides have a league game tomorrow. Windscale have won just once in eleven games this season but they featured in an exciting 5-5 draw with Hearts of Liddesdale last Saturday.
BIG EVENT TONIGHT
City hold a Speakers’ Evening tonight at Upperby Institute Social club, when the special guests are ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney, and Liverpool-born comedian Gary Skyner. The evening sold out within a few weeks of being arranged, and those in attendance should be in for an entertaining time.
UNDER 12s GIRLS UPDATE
City’s under 12s girls took advantage of the half-term break this week, when they met Newlaithes Pinks on Wednesday afternoon. City won the game 4-1 with Ellie Richardson scoring all four goals. Girl of the game was awarded to Caitlin Blacklock.
FREE WEEKEND FOR ALLIANCE SIDE IN MARCH
The Northern Alliance league has allowed City a free date on Saturday 27th March, when the scheduled game was away at Alnwick Town. This will allow players and officials to travel to Wembley for Carlisle United’s Johnstone’s Paint trophy final against Southampton. It looks unlikely that the same will apply in the County League, as their committee are becoming increasingly concerned with the backlog of fixtures.
GOOD WIN FOR UNDER 9s WHITES
City's under 9s Whites beat Upperby 4-0 last weekend. The goals came from Danny (2), Liam (who scored a cracker) and a penalty from Alex. It was a difficult choice to pick a star player but the award went to Nathan, for his all-round play.
FA YOUNG LEADERS
There is an opportunity for 14-16 year olds to become more involved in football, through the Young Leaders scheme. It can provide a first taste of football coaching for this age-group and, who knows, maybe even a career move. More details can be found here, and if anyone is interested, please e-mail us here.
SPEAKERS' EVENING- DRAW PRIZES
We have been asked to remind all team managers to bring along a bottle of spirits, or similar, as a draw prize on Friday evening. The Speakers' night, at Upperby Institute, begins at 7.30 pm.
COUNTY LEAGUE UPDATE
City lost 2-0 at Wigton Harriers last Saturday in round 1 of the Whitehaven Cup. Meanwhile, in league action, FC32 hammered Carlisle Amateurs 4-0, and this probably makes the Workington-based side slight favourites for the league title. South Workington are still top but they have played two games more than both City and FC32. The table can be seen here.
GILLFORD PARK SQUEEZE THROUGH
Northern League side Gillford Park needed extra-time last night before beating Westmorland League side Wetheriggs 2-1 in the County Cup quarter-final. Wetheriggs had beaten Carlisle United in the previous round, and they could have equalised in the last minute of extra-time but they missed a penalty.
Penrith meet Netherhall tonight in the remaining third round tie, with the winners at home to Aspatria in the quarter-final.
HELPERS FOR WAZA'S WALK
We have updated our calendar to show the helpers on each day with Waza's fund-raising walk, from John O'Groats to Carlisle. From 3rd to 17th April, Warren will be heading south from the Scottish outpost, and he hopes to arrive at Brunton Park during Carlisle United's game with Walsall. The "Waza's Walk" website can be seen here, and donations may now be made on-line.
WAZA'S WALK PREPARATIONS CONTINUE
Footage is now available of the early-morning training sessions being undertaken by City coach Warren Steele as he prepares for his charity walk from John O'Groats to Carlisle. The photos are here.
INTERESTING FRIENDLY FOR UNDER 16s
City's under 16s have a friendly match this evening against the Carlisle United Centre of Excellence squad at that age-group. The game is being played at Caldew School, Dalston on the artificial surface and kicks off at 6.30 pm. It should be a tough test for the City squad against players who are likely to be the best in the county for their age.
UNDER 7s MATCH REPORTS
Coach Warren Steele has provided match reports from the under 7s victories over Abbeytown and Cotehill- the reports are here
UNDER 11s WIN AT LONGTOWN
City's under 11s won 4-1 at Longtown on Sunday, with goals from Luke Moore (2), Callum Gawith & Jake Williams. Man of the match was awarded to Conor Keyes.
ANOTHER WIN FOR UNDER 10s GIRLS
City's under 10s girls won for the second successive weekend on Sunday, as they beat Stanwix 5-1. The goals were scored by Taylor Hurst, Lucy Abbott (2), Sophie Allen & Casey Marsh. Girl of the game was awarded to Taylor Hurst.
ANOTHER NEW NAME FOR AMATEURS
City's County League rivals Carlisle Amateurs are about to undergo yet another name-change. After starting life in 2008 as St. Margaret Mary's, the club changed their name and playing venue at the beginning of the 2009/10 season. Their club website is now proclaiming that a new identity is about to be revealed again.
COACHES ASSOCIATION LOOKING FOR IDEAS
The county's FA Coaching Association, of which Carlisle City are a member, are looking for suggestions for future coaching sessions. The Association will organise a suitable coach to lead the session, but they are keen to hear of any particular subject that members would like to see covered. Please e-mail us here, and we will pass any suggestions to the Cumberland FA.
VICTORY FOR UNDER 11s A
In a hard-fought game at the weekend, Carlisle City under 11s A beat Gillford Park 3-2. During the game, both goalkeepers made unfortunate errors leading to goals, and man-of-the-match Vincent Wong scored a hat-trick for City. Luke Dickinson also deserves a mention for a strong defensive display.
GIRLS TEAMS UPDATE
City's under 14s girls lost 2-0 against Abbeytown yesterday. The game was end-to-end with very few chances, but Abbeytown converted those that came their way. Neither side had any substitutes so all the girls had to work even harder, without a rest. The girl of the game was awarded to the full team.
The under 16s won 2-1 in a tight game, also against Abbeytown. City had the better of the first half and led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a headed goal from Lauren Croft, the smallest player on the pitch. However, Abbeytown levelled within two minutes of the second half beginning. City withstood ten minutes of pressure after this, and defended as a team as they started to play their way back into the game. They took the lead again through a Backy Rush strike from just inside the area that sneaked its way into the corner of the net. Once again, all of the girls were asked to share the girl of the game award, in a fine team effort. Thanks to Duncan Adams for the report.
CITY IN ALLIANCE STALEMATE
City's Alliance side drew 0-0 at Cramlington Town yesterday afternoon, in their first goalless game of the season. The result was possibly something of a surprise given that Cramlington had conceded 16 goals in their previous two games.
No match report is available this weekend, but anyone with comments on the game can leave them on our messageboard.
There were only three other Premier division games played yesterday. Harraby Catholic Club continued their recent impressive form with a 2-1 win at Ponteland. Murton caused something of an upset by beating Seaton Delaval 4-1 and Wark took a big stride towards the league title as they beat Walker Central 2-1, to move 8 points clear at the top of the table, which can be seen here.
WEEKEND PREVIEW
In the Northern Alliance tomorrow, City travel to Cramlington Town, who have endured a tortuous two weeks. They were hammered 9-0 last week at Harraby Catholic Club, and this followed a 7-0 defeat at home to 1st division Cullercoats. However, City's recent away form is also poor, with three straight defeats and ten goals conceded.
Wark remain favourites for the league title, as they lead by five points , with two games in hand. However, the season is just beginning its second half, and there is enough time for many sides to launch a challenge.
In the County League, City return to cup action as they travel to Wigton Harriers in round 1 of the Whitehaven Cup. This game has been postponed several times already in this weather-affected season. Harriers have managed to play more games in the Premier division this season than any other side. To date, they have won three and drawn two of their ten games played. In league action tomorrow, FC 32 meet Carlisle Amateurs in an interesting encounter at the top of the table.
In the Cumbria Womens league, City Ladies meet Penrith AFC on Sunday at the Sheepmount (k.o. 2.00). Back in September, City beat Penrith 2-1 at Frenchfields in their only league success to date. City were beaten 4-1 last Sunday at Kendal Wattsfield, and the league continues to be led by Whitehaven, who have won seven of their eight matches.
